A-Z Book Tag

Hello! Trying to do a quick and easy book tag right now. I was tagged by EG Bella, and I tag anyone who’s interested.

A. Author you’ve read the most books from

Almost certainly Mercedes Lackey. I’ve also read a lot of books by George MacDonald, and a fair handful by Anne MacCaffrey and Marian L Thorpe. Probably in that order, I am thinking.

Magic's Pawn by Mercedes Lackey, a fantastic character novel with magical horses.

Storm Warning by Mercedes Lackey, a magical character novel with avatars from the gods and a dreadful threat returning from the past.

Arrow's Fall by Mercedes Lackey, conclusion to the Heralds of Valdemar Trilogy; a character driven YA novel with a beautiful ending of joy beyond grief.

B. Best sequel ever

I’ll have to say Magic’s Promise by Mercedes Lackey. There is a scene in there that is just THE BEST. But Magic’s Pawn was great, too. And it’s actually Magic’s Price that I read first, and Magic’s Promise that I finished on. The whole series is good.

Review here.

Magic's Promise by Mercedes Lackey, a character-driven novel with themes of grief, hope, and home.

C. Currently reading

Something I don’t think I’m allowed to talk about yet ….

D. Drink of choice

Water. Do you have any idea how good water is? Of course you do! We all drink it! It is one of the best things ever. The cool taste of water on a hot day, clear, refreshing, strong, beautiful!

E. E-reader or physical book

Physical book. Paperback, to be precise.

F. Fictional character you probably would have dated in high school.

None. No one – real or fictional – interests me in that way. Or did.

G. Glad you gave this book a chance

Wistful Ascending by JCM Berne does not sound like my sort of book. Superhero sci-fi space opera? Yeah, that definitely does not sound like something I’d be interested in. But it’s turned out to be one of my favorite books! And the rest of the series so far!

Review here.

Wistful Ascending, a slice-of-life superhero space opera with awesome themes of personal struggles. SPFBO 8 book.
H. Hidden gem

Asrian Skies by Anne Wheeler. There were some things in it that really spoke to me – and it’s not what I’d ever expect from a book marketed as Christian military sci-fi. It seems more of a psychological sci-fi.

Review here.

Asrian Skies by Anne Wheeler, psychological sci-fi with themes of overcoming in the midst of fear.
I. Important moment in your reading life

Discovering the Harper Hall trilogy? I loved Dragonsong, and it showed me a lot of things I like – like cozy, slice-of-life, character-focused novels – that I had not met yet. And dragon riders! I’d just been waiting to find those!

Dragonsong by Anne MacCaffrey, a slice-of-life cozy story with small dragons and beautiful songs.
J. Just finished

I think my last book finished was The Last Dragonlord by Joanne Bertin.

The Last Dragonlord by Joanne Bertin, a wild fantasy with immortal were-dragons and an odd romance plot.
K. Kind of book you won’t read

Erotica. Horror. Anything with too much gore in it.

L. Longest book you’ve read

Either The Priory of the Orange Tree or Inheritance. I’m not really sure which one is longer.

Review for Priory here.

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon, a big, thick book with dragons, magic, complex characters, and an epic quest.
Inheritance by Christopher Paolini, a thick, epic book and conclusion to the Inheritance Cycle, with an ending I have mixed feelings about.

M. Major book hangover because of…

What does this even mean? When you’re mad a series finally came to an end? I never have been. If I treasured a book that much, I’m happy to simply re-read it. I don’t mind endings, and if the whole series is complete and I’m still happy … that’s the best!

I was unhappy this series looks like it will never completed though. It had a lot of problems, but it was interesting I wanted to know what comes next, and I liked Wizard Fenworth and some of the other characters.

Dragons of the Watch by Donita K. Paul. A story about people trapped in a giant bottle where time doesn't pass.

N. Number of bookshelves you own

One.

O. One book you’ve read multiple times

One book I’ve read multiple times? I’ve read a lot of books multiple times. I really don’t keep good track of it. Probably Between Starfalls by S. Kaeth.

Review here.

Between Starfalls by S. Kaeth, an epic character-driven fantasy with themes of holding to hope in the darkness.
P. Preferred place to read

Anywhere that’s comfortable.

Q. Quote that inspires you

“Yet I know that good is coming to me – good is always coming, though few have at all times the simplicity and the courage to believe it. What we call evil, is the only and best shape which, for the person and his condition at the time, could be assumed by the best good.”

Phantastes, George MacDonald

R. Reading regrets

What even does this mean??!?!?

S. Series you’ve started and need to finish

I used to be really good about finishing all the series I started. But with the abundance of free or discounted books I’ve been getting from indie authors these days … I mean, I’d love finish more of your series, but I can’t afford them all, so I have to pick and choose! Two that have got my interest are Requiem of Stone by Julie Boglisch and Natural Forces by Jean Gill.

Demon's Song, a YA-ish mystery adventure with a very sweet cinnamon roll demon MC.
Queen of the Warrior Bees by Jean Gill, SPFBO 8 entry, a YA story about a struggle between man and nature, growing up, and making peace.

T. Three of your all time favorite books

Can these be books I’ve already mentioned? Magic’s Price by Mercedes Lackey, Phantastes by George MacDonald, Persuader by Amy Campbell. Fiery skies, it is really hard to keep this at three!

Review for Magic’s Price

Review for Persuader

Magic's Price by Mercedes Lackey, a story with the Dead MC X Happily Ever After ending that is my favorite.
Phantastes, a metaphysical fairytale by George MacDonald. Full of truths like a myth.

Persuader by Amy Campbell, a fantasy story with pegasi and magic, and an awakening god.
U. Unapologetic fangirl

Not sure if I’ve ever fangirled over anything except my own writing; now, you look at the way I can get about my world; that’s the only reference point I even have for what it might be like to be a fan.

Return of the Dragonriders by Raina Nightingale, fantasy trilogy, illustrated omnibus edition: DragonBirth, DragonWing, DragonSword. In a world where dragons are hated and feared, a young villager's life is changed forever when she meets a dragon hatchling. A red-winged black dragon flying upwards out of an overflowing volcanic lake.
V. Very excited for this release more than others

There are three releases I am very excited for right now. Runedance, sequel to Goldsong by Beth Hudson. Memories that Bind, 3rd in the Children of the Nexus series by S. Kaeth, and Shadow of Hyperion, 3rd in The Hybrid Helix series by JCM Berne.

W. Worst bookish habit

If a bookish habit makes me happy, it’s good and therefore cannot be ‘the worst’. Therefore, I do not think I have such a thing. However, I sometimes read books – or at least substantial portions of them – backwards (not word by word backwards, usually chapter by chapter backwards). Apparently, this is incredibly scandalous to some people. I cannot possibly understand why.

X. X marks the spot: Pick the 27th book from the top left shelf

This would be Epoch of the Promise: Vision’s Light. Yes. Truly.

Y. Your latest purchase

Ascendant, Songs of Chaos Rising #1, by Michael R. Miller.

Review here.

Ascendant by Michael R. Miller, an epic fantasy with a really neat setup, and awesome dragons!

Z. Z snatcher–book that kept you up way too late

Oh, like this doesn’t happen all the time? So much so I don’t really remember what’s what here? But … hmm … I think Obsidian: Awakening by Sienna Frost might be a contender for that position. Though … I really wasn’t staying up to read the book, I read the book because I wasn’t sleeping ….

Review here.

Obsidian: Awakening, an epic grimdark historical fantasy by Sienna Frost. Character driven with lots of main characters who are so hurt and just need to heal and be loved.
